Living Intentionally

A Weekend in Montego Bay, Jamaica: Just the Two of Us!

November 23, 2019 Living, Travel

Two weeks ago, Matt and I had the pleasure of celebrating two weddings for our beautiful friends! It just so happened that both weddings fell on the same weekend; one in Charlotte, NC and the other in Montego Bay, Jamaica. We had such great time celebrating LOVE that weekend, and what better way to do it than just the two of us. I love my kids dearly, but spending time away with my man, is needed too. Here is the recap of our time in Jamaica, and the ins and outs of where to stay, what to do, and where to eat in Montego Bay.

Where to Stay

Montego Bay has a lot of all-inclusive resorts to choose from. We decided to stay at S Hotel Jamaica, overlooking Doctor’s Cave Beach, which is said to be one of the best beaches in Montego Bay. With plans of only staying from Saturday to Monday, location was very important to us, but we didn’t want to lose on amenities and the style of hotel. It was seriously the best decision that we made. As soon as we walked through the doors, the hotel staff was so welcoming. They offered us rounds of rum punch, which was the best rum punch I have ever had.

If you want to get a more authentic experience, or want something more budget friendly, I suggest staying in an Airbnb. They had great options, you just have to book well in advance.

Where to Eat in Montego Bay

Our hotel provided a great breakfast buffet, and they had on-site restaurants. For breakfast, they had an authentic Jamaican selection which included boiled green banana, boiled and fried dumpling, plantains, ackee and saltfish, yams, and callaloo. They also had a wide variety of fruit, omelette, pancakes, and pastries. I listed below a few must-try restaurants.

  • The Pork Pit. Every local will tell you to try this place. The jerk chicken is AMAZING. Not all jerk is created equal, and just know, if you haven’t had jerk chicken from Jamaica you are missing out.
  • Juici or Tastee Restaurants. You have to try a Jamaican pattie, and these two restaurants carry the best patties in Montego Bay. They are franchises located throughout the island.
  • Scotchies. Everyone will tell you that Scotchies is a must visit.
  • The HouseBoat Grill They also have happy hour daily from 5:30-7
  • Floyd’s Pelican Bar. This famed bar is located in the middle of the ocean, how cool! You can only get there by boat, and it’s about 1 hour and 45 minutes from Montego Bay.

What To Do in Montego Bay

We didn’t have anything on our agenda. The only things that I cared to accomplish were to read, relax, and enjoy each other. After kids, you value alone time together so much more. I was able to read two books on our trip: Red at the Bone, and I’m Telling the Truth but I’m Lying. I listed below things that we would have considered if we had more time.

  • Go Bamboo River Rafting down the Martha Brae River. Going down Rio Grande River is also an option, but Martha Brae is slower paced.
  • Visit the Luminous Lagoon. This is a night cruise that starts at sunset with Glistening Waters. The lagoon, surrounded by mangroves, is home to microscopic organisms that emit a bio-luminescent light when agitated. The water glows a beautiful blue and becomes illuminated when these organisms are disturbed.
  • Enjoy Jamaican Night Life. The “hip strip”, is along Gloucester Avenue. Margaritaville, and Pier 1 are the places to go.
  • Go Swimming/Horseback Riding on the Beach. You can ride the horses right into the Caribbean at Chukka Cove. They are well trained horses that wade into the waves.

We had such a great time in Montego Bay. I would love to explore Ochos Rios or Negril next time. If you haven’t visited, I definitely suggest adding to your list!

Thanks for reading 🙂

I went to Jamacia about 7 months ago with some friends and had a pretty good time. We spent most of out time in Ochos Rios. We stayed in an AirBnB there and had a blast at Dunn Rivers Falls. If I ever go back and visit Montego Bay, Ill be sure to check out some of places you highlighted in this blog 🙂
